Success for RB Farquhar Manufacturing in the Sunday Times/Bank of Scotland £25 million Entrepreneur Challenge
European bathroom pod market leader RB Farquhar Manufacturing has won the first regional final in Edinburgh of one of the UK’s most prestigious business awards, the Sunday Times/Bank of Scotland £25 million Entrepreneur Challenge.
Managing director Michael Shand had to make a “Dragon’s Den” style presentation to the judging panel, which comprised senior executives from both challenge sponsors as well as entrepreneurs Akmal Khushi, managing director of Jacobs and Turner, and Deirdre Romanes, chief executive, Clyde and Forth Press.
As its regional prize, RB Farquhar manufacturing will receive a BoS funding package of £5 million free of interest and arrangement fees for three years, which the company plans to use to capitalise on new market opportunities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As the Scottish and Northern Irish regional winner, RB Farquhar will now go on to the national final in London on 12 December. The national winner will also have the chance to have four days of boardroom mentoring from one of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs, Sir Philip Green, billionaire owner of the Arcadia Group.
“This award recognises the great success we have had since we opened our market-leading bathroom pod assembly plant in the Czech Republic in 2003,” said Michael Shand.
“We have identified the UAE and Saudi hotel markets in particular as having outstanding potential for the successful introduction of bathroom pods, and we are planning to take our first steps into the Gulf by exhibiting at the huge Big 5 trade exhibition in Dubai in November.”
